Join Devaa Haley Mitchell in conversation with Clare DuBois, founder of Treesisters for a live Q&A called For The Love of Trees! During the dialogue, they’ll be discussing some of these themes: Why planting trees is so fundamental to healing our planet. What other practical actions can we each take to be the best possible stewards of our planet. How nature connectedness can transform your life and leadership. Why women are more disproportionately impacted by climate change than men. How the funds donated to TreeSisters are spent. Lastly, any answers to YOUR questions!
Food
Try A Vegan Recipe from Team Shift
Try any of the vegan food recipes suggested from the Team Shift community feed.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Do at Home
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 3 container(s) out of the landfill each day.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
Do at Home
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 1 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Simplicity
Core Values
Do at Home
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Simplicity
Track My Purchases
Do at Home
I will spend 10 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Water
Calculate My Water Footprint
Do at Home
I will calculate my Water Footprint to learn about my tap water use and "virtual water" use.
Energy
Calculate your carbon footprint
For individuals who would also like to calculate their carbon footprints. The creation of this particular Action was inspired by Kahea Pacheco, the Ceo of Women's Earth Alliance.

Lila Johnson 10/27/2021 8:43 AMIt has been a joy participating in this with everyone. May every day be the people's eco challenge. I know I didn't do everything I wanted to, so I have my work cut out for me moving forward... Here's to little changes, every day, and big ones, too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterHow does your view on water consumption change after completing this action?
Lila Johnson 10/20/2021 2:44 PMI wonder what using an ALTERED kitchen faucet would do? it says 98% less water... -
Lila Johnson 10/20/2021 2:34 PMI thought I'd miss the egg with fried rice, but I really didn't! Over med-high heat, saute 1 chopped onion, 2 chopped carrots and 2 chopped celery stalks in avocado oil 3-5min... add 3 cloves minced garlic and 2t minced ginger, 1min... add 1 chopped zucchini and 4oz chopped mushrooms, 5 min... add 3c cooked rice, 1/3c soy sauce, 2T rice wine vinegar.. cook until liquid absorbed... add chopped cilantro, 1/4c chopped almonds and 2 sliced scallions... serves 4 -
Lila Johnson 10/18/2021 9:03 AMhttps://www.biggestlittlefarmmovie.com ... I have 2 teenagers. They *really don't like* documentaries. Both of them sat through this entire movie. At least one of them cried. What I'm saying is: Well worth the watch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat was your favorite vegan food recipe that you tried?
Lila Johnson 10/18/2021 9:01 AMWeekend Win! Trader Joe's vegan shredded cheese makes for *amazing* vegan quesadillas! Roast some butternut squash, loosely smash some black beans, slice some avocado... Warm a tortilla, add "cheese" cumin and lemon, add generous portions of squash, beans and avocado, a little more cheese, and fold the tortilla in half. A little cilantro cashew creme with lemon and salt will make this binge-worthy. -
Lila Johnson 10/15/2021 9:39 AMAutumn Vegan breakfast has been great this week with steel-cut oats boiled with a handful of fresh cranberries and a Granny Smith apple. A little vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg to finish makes me feel like I'm having apple pie for breakfast - which is a relief because I really liked butter and milk in oatmeal... -
Lila Johnson 10/13/2021 9:03 AMIt's especially nice to be tuning in more intentionally to nature as the seasons are changing... so much to notice, so much to appreciate... so humbling to recognize the ancient intelligence expressing and unfolding anew in every moment - really makes me want to do everything possible to have that ancient intelligence UNDISRUPTED by my unconscious habits, and to bring myself and my actions (and extending outward through my example and advocacy) into harmony with this relentless loving flow of life...-
Kristin Wildensee 10/15/2021 3:56 PMI so love that word, UNDISRUPTED! I feel that when I am interacting with nature, that sense of love, care, respect, awe and reciprocity. Not wanting my actions or habits to negatively intervene on these miraculous processes of nature that are so interconnected and in balance. Thank you for your post!

Lila Johnson 10/09/2021 3:14 PMVegan Minestrone Soup (it makes a big batch!)
2 potatoes, cubed
1t salt
1 bay leaf
1 large onion, chopped
2 carrots, chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped fine
3T red wine vinegar
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 zucchini, chopped
1 summer squash, chopped
8oz mushrooms, chopped
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can kidney beans or mixed beans
1t basil
1/4 to 1/2 t crushed red pepper
salt & pepper to taste (white pepper makes a nice difference!)
1/2 lemon, juice only
1/2 t honey (optional)
Boil potatoes in 8c water with 1t salt and 1 bay leaf. Separately, while that's boiling, cook onion, carrot and celery for 10 minutes. Add red wine vinegar and cook off liquid. Add garlic, cook 1 minute, add other vegetables and cook 5 minutes. By now, the potatoes should be done. Add all veg to potatoes in water, add cans of tomatoes and beans, basil and red pepper. Cook 20 minutes. PULL OUT BAY LEAF!! Blend 1/2 of the soup (either with hand blender or in regular blender) and return to pot. Add lemon juice (and maybe 1/2t honey)...

Lila Johnson 10/06/2021 9:10 AMVery excited to be a part of the People's EcoChallenge and Team Shift! The depth of actions available just shows me that, while I've been careful about a lot of things for a long time, there's always more to learn, always more ways to be more sensitive to my impact... that being environmentally friendly isn't an accomplishment as much an ongoing process and one that I value and want to continue to discover and implement as a way of being! -
Lila Johnson 9/29/2021 7:48 PMLet's talk about money! I think we all know that every dollar we spend votes for the kind of world we want to live in, and I think we're all really wanting more transparency from the companies we support. Well, where we keep our money has a lot to do with how our personal stewardship of money impacts the world. I've been using Aspiration Bank for a few years and am so glad. They don't fund fossil fuels, nor charge fees! (fees are optional!) They monitor my carbon footprint of my purchases, have an automatic 'round up' tree planting option.... lots of good stuff... Do you have an Eco-bank? Or maybe an eco-investment plan?-
Liz Siu 10/01/2021 11:02 AMYes! I am currently waiting for https://www.purposebanking.com/ to start (a vegan cruelty-free eco-friendly bank that donates percentages to vegan advocacy)
