This has been a good EcoChallenge for me. The biggest thing I thought about was single-use plastic. I took on a challenge to reduce my intake. After visiting a grocery store where the vast majority of items were contained in some sort of plastic, I realized that I needed to define single-use plastic for this challenge.

To make my challenge more palatable and not make my family suffer in terms of what we can eat, I decide to define single-use plastic from the perspective of the item inside. In other words, if the item contained within the plastic is used all at once, then I would consider it 'single-use plastic.' I know that I am splitting hairs with this definition, but I was alright with it because it then made my challenge more realistic.

I aimed to use less than three single-use plastics each day. By and large, I was able to meet this challenge with the exception buying my daughter a treat after a painful orthodontist appointment.

For my other challenges, I wanted to meditate more. I was only able to meditate twice, but felt the value in making the time, so I plan to continue and hopefully increase over time.

I also made myself the light police in the house. For the most part, I am good about turning off lights, but occasionally forgot, so it was good to make it a focus. My family, especially my son, leaves lots of lights on, so I have been mentioning it to him in a loving way.

Overall, a good experience and one I will participate in for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for sharing Kevin! What wonderful insights. I did meditation for one of my EcoChallenges too!

Meditation for me is about clearing away all the cluttered thoughts from the day to day grind. It allows me to focus on my breathing and in the end clear my mind. After only fifteen minutes, I have better focus because I living in the present and not thinking about what could have been or what will be.

What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I am really glad I took on this challenge as I had gotten into the bad habit of watching TV while eating breakfast and lunch. It wasn't hard to put into practice as we have a beautiful porch so it was nice breathing fresh air while eating. I also reconnected with several podcasts that I haven't listen to in a while. I also change my breakfast time to eat with my daughter. We read together, played games and just talked. Overall a positive experience that plan to keep in place moving forward.
