Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's EcoChallenge! I joined the EcoChallenge to challenge myself and to join my co-workers in setting goals to better the environment and the community. Every time I do EcoChallenge, I always end it inspired and motivated to keep up my goals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Reduce Refined Sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

I wasn't able to completely cut out sugar from my diet, but I did cut down 80-90% of my processed sugar intake. I did think I was addicted to sugar before the challenge, so I was nervous to cut it down. It helped I didn't completely cut it out, but I realized I was eating a lot more sugar than I previously thought. I feel great now, and it has improved my diet, especially cutting out processed foods.

I too like sugar to a degree! I need it in my coffee!  But I have switched to using unrefined sugars such as raw cane sugar or raw honey instead of processed white sugar.  It still is sugars I guess, but maybe a better kind to use when you need it!  I try to reduce how much I use in everything, also for better health!  Good job on cutting it down!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

People in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places because meat is expensive. Forests and rainforest are demolished for grazing pasture for farm animals. Eating less meat is good for our health and for our planet. Also, in the United States, our portions are so big, that we are probably exceeding our daily recommendation of meat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

One food choice that I could make that would do more good and less harm is having less meat and animal products. This incorporates more vegetables into my diet.

Also, going to the Farmer's Market. When I go to the Farmer's Market, that means I am supporting local business and farmers and buying more vegetables from them! I really enjoyed going to the Farmer's Market this past weekend, and the vegetables I bought were so fresh and full of flavor. Supporting the local farmer's market also helps to decrease the use of gasoline, as it cuts down the transit of delivering food.

Farmer's markets also often contain the same products with much less packaging and are usually better quality! An easy way to reduce meat is to start replacing some of your meats with alternatives (e.g instead of ground meat, you could use ground veggie which looks and feels similar and allows you to make the same dish, but meatless!)
