Say No to Plastic Straws

Do at Home

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

My largest single use is vegetable bags. I have begun using them for scraps and instead of using a zipper bag to season proteins/veggies.  They are also great to protect items in shipping and box fillers.

Thank you for sharing your ideas! Those are smart ways to reuse vegetable bags from the grocery store.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

Keeping reusable bags in my car for quick trips into stores.  If I forget, then I place as many items in a shopping cart, check out without a bag and then simply place into the bag at my car.
