Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
-
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 4:00 PMI thought that I would end this Ecochallenge with a quote about the time well spent. "Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 3:52 PMI found that Clackamas County has a place in Oregon City where I can recycle motor oil, bulky waste (mattresses & appliances), envelopes lined with bubble wrap, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 3:47 PMThe Great Pacific Garbage Patch, aka Pacific Trash Vortex is something that is very disturbing to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 2:49 PMIf it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down. Actually I have been doing a better job of turning the water off in between placing dishes on the drying rack and when shaving. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 2:27 PMI could skip vacation, but that is no fun. I cancelled a flight that I had last weekend and ended up driving instead. It made my stay at the destination much shorter, but the journey was good. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthTo what extent do environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 2:10 PMExposure to dangerous or foreign substances creates health vulnerabilities and air pollution effects on humans are a significant public health concern, not only because of their role in climate change, but also because exposure to air pollution can increase morbidity and mortality. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 2:02 PMBy supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's). Global progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions needs sustainable transport. Countries cannot provide food security or healthcare without providing reliable and sustainable transport systems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. How have you used technology to replace in-person meetings or work this year?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 1:54 PMWe have been using Zoom, GoToMeeting, Microsoft Teams, Skype and Google Meet in place of in person meetings. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat changes would help food insecure regions have access to local, seasonal foods? How can your choices contribute to these changes?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 11:46 AMI could look into ancient way of dehydrating potatoes. This is still practiced in the high elevations of Bolivia & Peru. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Jon Peterson 10/27/2021 11:41 AMI would like to preserve some soups for later in the year. I have also been looking into storing roasted chilies from the garden in the freezer.
