Lura's actions
Action Track: Healing and Renewal
Happiness
Do at Home
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Energy
Calculate the Carbon Footprint of my Household
Do at Home
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Action Track: Healing and Renewal
Healthy Sleep
Do at Home
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
Do at Home
I will spend 10 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
Do at Home
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Energy
Turn It Off
Do at Home
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Energy
Repair and replace old insulation in my attic
After construction, I noticed last month that the workers left a number of areas with insulation pushed back or torn up when they did some re-wiring, allowing for a lot of heat loss.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
Do at Home
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about systemic racism.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole CommunityWhat did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?
-
Lura Griffiths 10/20/2021 9:03 AMA mixed bag. Somethings are easy, but others not so much, or point to some areas where considerable investment may be required. I feel more empathy for my customers! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint? What changes did you make or will you make?
Lura Griffiths 10/20/2021 9:02 AMIts large for a single house, but small for a duplex - which is what mine really is due to tenants in the lower 1/2. The biggest opportunity is the baseboard heat in the tenant space. I will investigate options to help them operate those more efficiently, as well as a possible upgrade to the DHW heater -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Lura Griffiths 10/14/2021 7:20 PMThe biggest difference for me is probably being more careful with over cooling in the summer, as well as looking at eventually upgrading the electric heat in my basement rental. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Lura Griffiths 10/14/2021 7:18 PMWe are lucky enough to have both hydro and wind as a part of our energy mix, but still rely on coal as well. Plus hydro is not without its impacts on the fish and other life in the rivers. And of course the asthma, and other lung and heart issues that result from burning coal are documented. Better to use less as well as use cleaner technologies to generate. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and RenewalConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Lura Griffiths 10/06/2021 2:21 PMI get up pretty early. The problem is that I still waste time in the evening and burn an extra hour on screen time when I really should just go to sleep. My best ritual is to soak in my hot tub for 20 minutes at night *instead of screen time. It i so much more soothing to sit outside and look at the trees/stars/etc than to surf the web/youtube. Plus, after I soakI am ready for bed! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and RenewalHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Lura Griffiths 10/06/2021 2:16 PMWhatever I focus on, grows - negative or positive. Practicing gratitude renews my positive energy, and gives me a greater sense of being a part of a bigger picture. Once I am a part of this bigger picture/world, I am more inclined to care for it. -
Lura Griffiths 10/06/2021 2:11 PMGreat to be a part of this! It's so easy to get caught up doing the same old same old. Glad for the chance to make some changes, and some support in helping them stick!
