  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

Bonton Farms in south of Dallas has great volunteer opportunities and serves an excellent farm fresh breakfast!!  A friend of mine tends the goats out there on Saturdays, but I'm actually interested in the vegetable garden - getting local kids involved in health and nutrition and providing healthy foods to residents of food desserts.

Last day of EcoChallenge!  I'm definitely taking the habit of Joyful Movement and an additional 30 minutes of sleep forward.  I have also learned more about racial justice and voter suppression.  The big bonus - I lowered my electric bill by going green!!

Oh no!  Only 3 days left and I haven't been able to calculate my water footprint!  I live in condo and don't have separate metering for water use - any thoughts or ideas??

Last few days of the EcoChallenge!  You can go backwards and check off your activities if you did them but didn't check in on that day - please do.  We are still earning more points per person than our MI and CA peers - so let's continue to ROCK this challenge!!

    Energy Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?

One thing I learned is that you do need to review your energy bills and track your usage.  Some of the least expensive plans were for much more electricity than I use and would have, based on my use, turned out to be much more expensive.   I've been on the same TXU plan for years - and it was too expensive!  Going green for me is actually cheaper!

Yay!  Comerica Texas Team is still leading the CA and MI teams!  We have slipped in the overall ratings - so let's ramp it up - Texas ROCKS!!

Getting 8 hrs of sleep and taking quiet time for myself is working wonders - definitely a habit I will carry over from this challenge!

One year I gave up "frivolous spending" for Lent.  It was great and I actually carried it on past Easter that year.  I committed to the Daily Action of considering Need over Want for this EcoChallenge.  Then I bought a pair fashionable combat boots on sale this weekend to add to my now 8 pairs of boots collection.  We all have our weakness - trick is how to forgive myself and do better going forward?!!

What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint? What changes did you make or will you make?

My electricity use is less than my neighbors per my billing statement - but my place is smaller, 854 sq'.  I average 700 kwh per month - in no A/C months it's around 350 and I did have 1 winter month at 1200.  I've purchased a toaster oven/air fryer and a hot plate - so I can unplug my range oven.  I use a personal fan in summer and personal heater in winter in my bedroom so I can keep temps at 67 in winter and 76 in summer - sometimes 73 when I can't sleep!

The Truth & Reconciliation Commission after Apartheid ended in South Africa (1948-1990) instigated by Nelson Mandela is an excellent model - it's not about retribution or punishment, it was about fairness, balance and restoring rights and property that were taken away from original residents as far back as the arrival of the 1st Europeans in the 1600's.  It was heartening to see a recent case in Manhattan Beach, CA - purchased in 1912 catering to black beach goers was taken back by the town after pressure and harassment by KKK and residents in 1924.  The land was recently returned to the heirs.  Since the 1950's the US Dept of Agriculture has confiscated 90% of black owned farms.  Cases are in court -but no program to restore land to heirs.
