I can't believe today is the last day of eco-challenge, it's been a great journey cultivating self-awareness!

How is your region being affected by climate change? How will it be affected in the future?

In Socal, we get a lot of wildfires that have become hard to contain, which also impacts air quality that is already poor from smog.  Additionally, we also do experience rising sea levels in coastal cities.  I think how climate change affects the future is ultimately if human behaviors are left unchanged, we will eventually run out of habitat for humans.

    Nature Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

Currently, I care a lot about zero waste.  Looking at how products can be eliminated through practicing simplicity, self-education, selecting products that can be repaired or purchasing replacement parts to last a long time.  It's also interesting to study the human desire- to buy, acquire, and the impulses that compel us to consume more, and the underlying drive.  I feel zero waste at its core is about self-awareness and creativity.  The more you know, the less you need!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

As we transition to cooler weather, I am celebrating the seasonal change on the planet, as well as inner shifts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

absolutely!During my morning walk, I noticed a few different bird songs than the usual suspects in my neighborhood.  Do we really know all the mysterious reasons that compel birds to sing? When I look up at trees, they provide so much for everyone on the planet- shade, food, home for birds, insects, and fungi kingdoms.  How many people can match that level of generosity for a lifetime?
