How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

Sometimes I think I'm less susceptible to advertising and the cultural push to accumulate more possessions (latest fashion, decoration for the home, kitchen gadget, etc.) but I'm not. It's a constant struggle and challenge to ask myself, "do I really need this?" Sometimes I tell myself, "yes! I absolutely need this" and then discover after some time that I in fact, didn't really need it. I've started to develop the mindset that if something new is going to come into the house, then it has to replace something that's going out (either through donation, recycling, etc.). Hopefully, going through that thought process will more often than not result in realizing I don't need to acquire the shiny, new thing.
