I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Waste
Go Paperless

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 3.4lbs (1.5kg) a month or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Calculate My Water FootprintHow does your view on water consumption change after completing this action?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:32 AMI thought my water consumption was better than most, but the amount of meat products I eat every day seriously affected how much water I use. It takes an enormous amount of water to grow food for the meat industry, plus even more water to process and transport it. Reducing meat from just one meal a week can make a huge difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Mulch the Base of Trees and PlantsWhere are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:29 AMThe St. Johns river is the closest natural body of water near me. It's constantly inundated with highway runoff and local power plant and manufacturing wastes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it often difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:26 AMWe don't always see how our waste affects other people or environments. If it's out of sight, it's out of mind. Education about different wastes is the best way to enlighten people about the consequences of their choices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:23 AMPaperless billing/mail has helped reduce some of my unnecessary home clutter. I'm already aware of statements via online apps and websites, so paper reminders are not needed anymore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:21 AMPollinators are important for almost every level of our food chain. They are responsible for pollinating most of our fruits and vegetables, and the food it takes to produce meat products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:19 AMHiking always makes me feel refreshed. Something about surrounding myself with nature grounds me and makes me happy. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:15 AMEnvironmental, community, and personal health intersect with integrity and stewardship. We must all hold ourselves to a high level of integrity to be good stewards to our environment and ourselves. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Know My HealthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Alex Hays 10/11/2021 7:11 AMStress can be a serious health risk and we can't always deal with it on our own. Meditation and "self care" days help, but it's always a good idea to set up therapy sessions too.
