Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 11:09 PM
I was surprised to learn how many nearby businesses offer inkjet cartridge recycling and I found out where to recycle batteries, milk and juice cartons, plastic clamshells and plastic film.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
People are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations are just a few examples. What is your chief motivation for foraging?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 9:44 PM
I'm interested in urban foraging as a source of food that is fresher and/or unavailable in my grocery store.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Replace Manual Thermostats
How do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for programmable ones will positively impact your life?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 8:30 PM
Programming my thermostat means I won't be paying to run the A/C or heat when I forget to turn it off before leaving, and no more waking up to a chilly home!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 8:27 PM
Reducing fuel costs and energy dependence are additional motivators for considering a more fuel-efficient vehicle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Calculate My Water Footprint
How does your view on water consumption change after completing this action?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 8:22 PM
I was surprised to learn that over half of my water consumption isn't even in my house but related to electricity, shopping, and diet. Reduced water usage is just one more reason to reduce meat consumption.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degradation and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 8:16 PM
Race and income impact the amount of chronic exposure to air pollution, which in turn contributes to hypertension and asthma, which are associated with severe cases of Covid-19. People impacted by racial and economic inequality have been the hardest hit by the pandemic, not because of lifestyle choices but because they were already marginalized.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 7:23 PM
Renting, swapping, upcycling, repair and redesign, and buying secondhand/vintage are all ways to express yourself without buying new clothes and accessories.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Research Impact Investing
How might impact investing help you better live your values?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/27/2021 7:10 PM
Impact investing offers opportunities to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact through investments that also produce financial returns - win/win! Choosing investments that align with my social and environmental values can advance causes that I support as well as build my savings.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Research Voter Suppression
What are the ways in which voters are prohibited from or discouraged from voting in your region and/or state? What could be done to get rid of these barriers?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/26/2021 10:06 PM
Washington is one of the least restrictive voting states in the country with vote by mail, registration by mail, and easy registration updates when you renew your driver license, People with felony convictions can vote upon completion of sentence. WA is one of only four states that use an independent redistricting commission.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Research Restorative Justice
How can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?

    Sandy Halvorson's avatar
    Sandy Halvorson 10/26/2021 9:42 PM
Financial debt and incarceration are experienced disproportionately by persons already impacted by racial and economic disparity. Restorative justice focuses on accountability and forgiveness rather than punitive sentences, often giving victims a greater feeling of justice and the perpetrators a chance to start over.
