  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? How will you use your compost once it is ready?

    Madison Gilpin 10/14/2021 8:18 AM
For the most part, if I have food scraps that are still edible I will save them for my families pigs to eat. For foods that are not edible, I have seen that I have a lot of waste. I live in an apartment so I don't have a garden of my own but I will be giving that compost to my mom to spread on her's.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I often will opt to buy a reusable bag from the shop that I am in. A lot of the bags given out at local grocery stores are reusable already so I am able to cut down on single use plastics that way. I try to refrain from using paper bags because, as a recent report by ULS shows, plastic bags create 39% less greenhouse gases than paper bags and 68% less than composted paper bags. Also, it has been found that plastic bags use up to 36% less non-renewable energy than paper bags to produce.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Madison Gilpin's avatar
    Madison Gilpin 10/12/2021 2:05 PM
You have to get creative with how you use items to get more than one use out of them
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn It Off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Madison Gilpin's avatar
    Madison Gilpin 10/12/2021 2:04 PM
I am not sure how it is generated in Hillsboro but I know that is isn't renewable.
