Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
Do at Home
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Nature

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work From HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. How have you used technology to replace in-person meetings or work this year?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:32 PMNearly all of my meetings now are on Zoom. I still regularly go into the office, but am working from home more often than prior to Covid. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go Get a Check UpHow do you practice self care?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:31 PMBy checking in with myself on a regular basis and noticing any changes in my mental health or physical health and addressing them instead of sweeping them under the rug. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Know My HealthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:30 PMAnnual checkups are important to set a base line and I rely on a support system of friends and family for mental health challenges. I try to be there for my friends as well during the challenging times in their lives and also proactively check in on them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Sign Up to VoteWhy is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:29 PMVoting is important because these representatives have such a massive impact on our local, national, and global decisions. I also participate in webinars and discussions about public land access and outdoor recreation as this is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:28 PMSingle-use coffee cups are currently my Achilles heel of disposables. I am hoping that as we move into a post-covid era that I can go back to bringing my own travel mug for coffee. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:27 PMI walk more to the grocery store now than I use to and make smaller, more frequent trips versus large "stock-up" trips. However, whenever dog food is on the shopping list - I still take my car because carrying a 33-pound bag of dog food is not a fun experience for multiple blocks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:25 PMGrowing up in an area where a car was a necessity, I didn't think to explore public transportation options. During my time in college and graduate school, having a car didn't always make sense financially so I learned how to take advantage of carpooling, rail systems, and buses to get everywhere I needed to go. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:24 PMWalking allows me more time to discover shops, bars and restaurants in my area that I might have whizzed past otherwise. I have found two new (well new to me) spots in my neighborhood already! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Heat and Cool NaturallyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Claire Gibson 10/12/2021 4:23 PMUsing an indoor clothesline to dry more clothes in sunny spots (currently limited to the space on my drying rack). Also looking into buying a solar charger for my phone on camping trips.
