  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
People are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations are just a few examples. What is your chief motivation for foraging?

Oregon Blackberry pie with vanilla ice cream. Kind of speaks for itself.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Gratitude is like a Ruffles chip: you can't stop after you get on a roll. A cinnamon roll? I'm mixing metaphors but the fact is that I'm very thankful to have the people around me to help me learn.

Conserving water is tricky. People think that they won't get clean when they turn the water off for 15 seconds less. But the real way to save water is in industrial and commercial use. These are the water drivers!
