Simplicity
Family Game Hour
Do at Home
I will spend quality time with family and friends by playing low-tech game(s) and/or through the spirit of imagination.
Simplicity
Research Impact Investing
Do at Home
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and determine if it is right for me.
Simplicity
Core Values
Do at Home
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Nature
Forage for My Food
Do at Home
I will use the resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
Do at Home
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Do at Home
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Do at Home
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Do at Home
I will spend 15 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Health
Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
Do at Home
I will spend 10 minutes practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation to nurture love and compassion for myself and others.
Health
Forgiveness
Do at Home
I will begin, or continue, on the journey of forgiving myself and/or other(s). I may do this through journaling, meditation, prayer, and/or talking with a licensed healthcare professional.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Action Track: Healing and Renewal
Nurture Self-Compassion
Do at Home
I will spend 10 minutes nurturing my Self-Compassion.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodPeople are motivated to forage for many different reasons: as a source for food, a means of income, to connect with nature, to participate in cultural tradition, transmitting specific ecological knowledge, or as a means of stewarding local and native plant populations are just a few examples. What is your chief motivation for foraging?
Jourdan Bruce 10/14/2021 7:56 AMMy chief motivation for learning about foraging for my own food locally is that i want to learn where the best place to get fresh food is from. I would love to find a good fishing spot and catch fish. -
Jourdan Bruce 10/12/2021 10:16 PMThe eco challenge is going great - I’m starting to be more and more aware of my bad habits (straws) which is the first step in breaking that habit! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Jourdan Bruce 10/12/2021 10:14 PMUsually I carry them. I think I could definitely start keeping reusable bags in my car or near the front door so I don’t forget them. -
Jourdan Bruce 10/11/2021 1:51 PMThis challenge is going really great! the only thing that has been a struggle so far is checking in on the weekends.. but hopefully I will be able to be more thoughtful these next couple of weekends! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and Renewal Nurture Self-CompassionHow can nurturing your Self-Compassion also nurture healthier relationships with others and the environment?
Jourdan Bruce 10/11/2021 1:50 PMbecause you can't fill someone else up, if you have nothing to give. If you fill yourself up with love, you'll have more love to give. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degradation and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Jourdan Bruce 10/08/2021 6:03 AMIn the area, Canyon County has the biggest number of low income community members. The biggest way that they are affected is not enough access to public transportation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Practice Loving-Kindness MeditationHow can practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation be helpful to the health of the environment?
Jourdan Bruce 10/07/2021 9:52 AMThe world has put so much pressure on us as humans to perform, to be perfect and to never mess up... which is very overwhelming. Practicing loving-kindness meditations can give you the freedom to look at yourself in a more kind way to that you CAN be who you want to be. How can you be healthy when you're the last person you're giving love and kindness to? -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Jourdan Bruce 10/07/2021 9:48 AMI struggle the most with reducing, but I can be more aware of what I'm choosing to purchase/grab (straws). I think the first big step in achieving anything is awareness. -
Jourdan Bruce 10/06/2021 8:53 AMLast year, I joined the challenge not really knowing what it was and had so much fun with it. This year, I joined the challenge because I am actually starting to really like sustainable living. I didn't grow up in a place that thought it was important, but it's definitely growing on me!
