Kristen Molnar 10/20/2021 10:08 AMI planned out my breakfast and dinner meals for the week and did some cooking on the weekend so I'd be prepared for when I was cranky and would normally be tempted to just order out. It takes effort but it's worth it not to waste the money on take out after having spent money on groceries and also NOT to ingest so much processed food.... it is AMAZING how many calories there are in take out. Better to just have it in the fridge or make it ahead in a more healthy manner instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Kristen Molnar 10/18/2021 5:43 AMSadly, it does NOT surprise me. I think this is about being honest with yourself about what and how you eat; I buy vegetables with the INTENTION of eating them because I think I should. But, I find myself throwing them out because I DON'T WANT to eat them. So, I think I am going to make a more concerted effort to buy frozen vegetables and find ways to "hide" them in foods (ie. zucchini in chili) rather than buy them fresh and watch them turn to mold in my refrigerator and contribute to the ridiculous amount of food waste in American landfills (40%!). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Kristen Molnar 10/15/2021 6:10 AMWe live in a very throw away society; we don't consider what we already have as being an investment. I remember listening to my great grandmother speaking about living through the Great Depression; you didn't throw things away- you repaired them or repurposed them. I look around my home and see how much stuff I have and try to remind myself I don't need anything else- I just want it. It's difficult to resist the temptation of constant marketing but I am trying valiantly to stop adding to the great landfill waste problem. BTW- did you know the US makes poor countries take our GARBAGE as a condition of giving aid? I was pretty horrified by that...need to write to my Congresspersons about that! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and RenewalConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Kristen Molnar 10/11/2021 8:06 AMI need to set a schedule; I use my phone and set reminders to start my bedtime routine (medications, care for dog, etc.). It's easy to be distracted by reading a book, doing household chores, watching a movie, etc. that I lose track of time and don't realize how late it is (especially now that it is getting dark earlier!). -
Kristen Molnar 10/06/2021 6:22 AMI do this every year to remind myself that no matter how small my actions may be, they can still be significant...and if everyone changes just one thing, the impact will be huge :-)
