Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
Do at Home
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about systemic racism.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
Do at Home
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
Do at Home
I will raise money to support Ecochallenge.org or another nonprofit.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Do at Home
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 2 container(s) out of the landfill each day.
Health
Reduce Refined Sugar
Do at Home
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Health
Know My Health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Health
Exercise Daily
Do at Home
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 60 minute(s) each day.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
Do at Home
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Health

Patricia Hofmeister 10/26/2021 8:24 PMThe timing for this challenge was perfect for me exercising more. On Mondays I am playing tennis twice for a total of 2 and 1/2 hrs plus an hour at Curves. -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/26/2021 8:01 PMTo my teammates, "What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make," (Jane Goodall). You have all made a difference by choosing to participate in this eccochallenge. -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/26/2021 7:50 PMI've really enjoyed this challenge. I find myself eating healthier and noticing the places that are trying to use less plastic. One of my favorite restaurants has stopped using styrofoam to go containers. I took one of my granddaughters to a store and they were using plastic bags. I asked if they had cloth and I was able to purchase some for only 25 cents. There is hope! -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/25/2021 8:47 PMTo all my zoo friends: "Real change doesn't happen from reading a quote or a new book. It doesn't happen during meditation. It doesn't happen after an, "I'm sorry." Real change happens when you take an action in a new way so many times that it becomes who you are. Trust action, not words. -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/23/2021 7:55 PMWent to lunch today with my husband. One of my challenges is to eat more fruits and vegetables. The resaurant we went to has great french fries, but I chose the veggie medley instead. -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/21/2021 12:31 PMI have watched 3 webinars on climate change/pollution and race. Yesterday, the Plastic Pollution Coalition presented one and again mentioned how so many factories that pollute are built in lower economic areas and many residents contract diseases, but aren't able to hire attorneys to prove they are responsible for the illnesses. -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/20/2021 7:39 PMMy favorite challenge is complimenting someone each day. I find myself seeing a groundsperson picking up trash and thanking that person for doing such a good job. Playing tennis this week, I gave many compliments. I've thanked people for being such good friends and for sharing experiences with me. It feels so good to make other people feel good, especially those who seldom get complimented. -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/16/2021 3:35 PMAfter two days of rain, it was great to take my granddog Maggie for a 2 mile walk at Kirkwood Park on this sunny day! -
Patricia Hofmeister 10/15/2021 10:27 PMWatched my now 5 year old granddaughter tonight. Discussed her nature walk and how she learned about littering. We are going to make plans to make a visit to our zoo and pick up trash.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Know My HealthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Patricia Hofmeister 10/14/2021 7:50 PMI am a retired psychotherapist. I made a living helping other people identify their issues and helped with solutions. I deal with the physical and emotional stress of the the big problems we face in many ways. My faith helps me greatly. I also draw strength from my family and friends. Exercise, expecially playing tennis is a great stress reducer.
