Say No to Plastic Straws

Do at Home

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I use plastic plates, cups, and bowls in my dorm. Recently, I switched to a reusable water bottle that I bring to class with me, so I cut out plastic water bottle use. I can replace plastic plates, cups, and bowls, however with melamine plates, cups, and bowls. These are better for the environment, because they are reusable.

The exercise in which I acknowledge three things that I am thankful for daily really encourages me to appreciate the little things. This keeps me centered, as even on a bad day, it reminds me that there are good things that have happened, even if they are small.
