This fall is so different from last year. It's quieter and I think right now it seems like it's really hard for folks to engage. I am glad of the ecochallenge providing a way to build our online community as we continue to work from our homes.

I think building community is going to have to be more of a deliberate action in the future as we continue to have more and more remote work options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I'm not sure its exactly decluttering my home, but I own a yarn business that I run from my house. Anyway, over the weekend I took about 40 skeins of yarn that weren't selling and overdyed them with some nice colors. Overdyes often sell well and I expect to see them rehomed in December.

I just want to say the students are doing a great job and at least one of the PCC student teams is beating the main PCC tem on a points/person basis.

I'm so glad we planted the tree over the weekend when the weather was nice.  I have been a colossal klutz this week, something I might as well chalk up to the weather change and my related injuries are slowing my walks down. Over the weekend though, we got out to a local pumpkin patch and picked up a pumpkin. We had a great walk around the corn maze.

Here are some shots of my family planting our new Japanese maple in the back yard. It's in a shady spot. There are already a couple of trees around so it's good that it won't get very tall (about 12'). My daughter was very excited did a lot of digging. I mostly lugged mulch while they dug. We've got some pretty hard clay soils.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I think about my neighbors more. I added a book to the little free library called The Sum of Us and it was great to walk over the next day and see that someone had checked it out.

Very cool.  The little free libraries are popping up all over.  This reminds me of the "bartering for goods and services" that we used to have.  I still like this idea and try and do it whenever possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I'm currently working from home, but we signed our daughter up for carpool which has been really helpful. I hope I can keep working from home at least some of the time when we resume normal operations.

We're lucky to live within less than a mile of the grocery store.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
How does your view on water consumption change after completing this action?

I thought this was an interesting exercise particularly as it asks the about household habits. It's great to check out the various tips and see which ones I can encourage my family.

I hope everyone is enjoying this gorgeous day. It's providing me with a lot of energy to launch my ecochallenge.

We're adding a new tree to the yard! This is a Japanese maple. It's going in a shady area - I expect one of the trees near it's future home to come down in the next couple of years (it belongs to the neighbors and is leaning rather hard). Our lilac had to be pruned back severely due to ice damage, so we thought we'd add this little decorative tree to the yard.

I had to have it delivered - it's coming tomorrow (along with a lot of wood chips), just in time to get planted for the ecochallenge!
