Karen's actions

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Do at Home

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 1 container(s) out of the landfill each day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Advocate For More Food Packaging Options

Do at Home

I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Office soft plastic recycling

We are a 4 story office building. We already have "sort it out" containers for compostables, and hard plastics including food containers, which is handled through an independent contractor. However, soft plastics are not included. I have set up containers for collecting soft plastics on two floors, and will advertise for people to bring their soft plastics with them to the office. I will collect and take them out to the Zero Waste recycling centre.

I have set up bins in my building for people to bring in their soft plastics, which I will then gather and take out to our local Zero waste centre.

I will propose this (again) for adding to our laundry room. Perhaps our new families might help me make it so.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

It concerns me that we find a "win-win" solution for farm to market delivery.  No one will buy squished fruit, so we don't want to waste that, but we need to find sustainable packaging that isn't plastic that is strong enough to protect the produce, and but not last forever in the environment!

I wish I could generate points for the team for complaining about plastic bags for frozen fruits and vegetables, because I would generate an enormous amount of points. I despise them. The bags are small and therefore there are more of them.  I don’t have an answer, but I think back to childhood for options before plastic.  As I recall from earlier years frozen food was in waxed cardboard.
Or, Literally farm to table setup- just a box of produce with the dirt  still on.
Wooden crates were also used in the past for fruit. I still have a very thick waxed cardboard box from the eighties sporting “Melons”.

    Waste
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

Rescued two plastic containers from general trash and put them into the plastics recycling bin at my workplace.
